Dubrovnik Game of Thrones Locations to Visit this Summer!

Game of Thrones Dubrovnik

Over the last 10 years, more people than ever before found out about Dubrovnik, a city that became one of the most visited Game of Thrones locations. The more popular the show became, the more fame its filming sites gained as well, and Croatia is one of those countries that became more popular thanks to Game of Thrones.

And maybe no other GOT filming site gained as much popularity as Dubrovnik. The beautifully preserved medieval city located on the Eastern shores of the Adriatic Sea, is certainly quite impressive! But ever since being chosen as one of the locations where Game of Thrones was being filmed, Dubrovnik became more than just a historical medieval city. It became part of the pop culture.

The first time I visited Dubrovnik, I was blown away by how imposing and beautiful this city looked. Walking on its narrow streets, I couldn’t help but imagine how life might have been there hundreds of years ago. Dubrovnik has this power of taking you back in time, and I loved that about it!

Kings Landing Dubrovnik

No wonder that the producers of Game of Thrones decided to include Dubrovnik in their plans. It was the perfect setting for King’s Landing, the capital of Westeros, the seat of the Iron Throne. This was the place where the queen and the king of the Seven Kingdoms lived and ruled.

So, if you are planning to go to Dubrovnik, make sure to pay a visit to some of these locations that made an appearance in Game of Thrones.

Dubrovnik Game of Thrones Locations – The Old Town

Dubrovnik is known as The Pearl of the Adriatic. It is a medium sized medieval city that made the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in 1979. The city charms its visitors with its marble streets, churches and orange terracotta tiled roofs. The Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architectural elements come together to create a space infused with art and history.

Many scenes depicting King’s Landing were filmed in the Old Town of Dubrovnik. The Jesuit Staircase appeared in the show as the staircase to the Sept of Baelor and was the backdrop for Cercei’s famous (or, better said, infamous) “Walk of Shame” scene.

Other locations in the Old Town that made an appearance in the show, are: St. Dominic Street, Ploče Gate (doubled as the entrance to the Red Keep in the show), the Ethnographic Museum Rupe (doubled as the exterior of Littlefinger’s brothel) and Rector’s Palace (was used to depict the residence of the Spice King of Qarth).

The Walls of Dubrovnik

The city of Dubrovnik has defensive walls that stretch all around the Old Town, enclosing it completely. The walls have a total length of 1,940 meters and a maximum height of 25 meters. They were continuously fortified between the 13th and the 19th century, and were considered one of the greatest fortification systems of the Middle Ages. The walls were reinforced by three circular and 14 quadrangular towers, five bastions, two angular fortifications and the large St. John’s Fortress.

Bokar Fortress, the Seaside Walls and the West Wall all made it on the screen as parts of King’s Landing and Red Keep walls.

Dubrovnik Game of Thrones Locations – Pile Bay

Pile Bay made an appearance in several scenes in the show. It was here that the Lannisters bid Myrcella farewell as she is being sent to Dorne. It is also here, on the Pile Bay jetty, that Lord Baelish and Sansa discuss escape plans.

Pile Gate is the main entrance to The Old Town of Dubrovnik, and it also appeared in many scenes throughout the series, mostly as a place of procession.

Dubrovnik Game of Thrones Locations – Minčeta Tower

This is the highest point in the Walls of Dubrovnik and offers an amazing view of the Old Town and of its surroundings. The imposing structure of the tower has already become a landmark of Dubrovnik.

In Game of Thrones, Minčeta Tower makes an appearance in season 2 as the House of Undying in the city of Qarth. It is here that Daenerys comes looking for her stolen dragons.

Dubrovnik Game of Thrones Locations – Fort Lovrijenac

This imposing structure stands on a cliff, 37 meters tall, just outside the Western part of Old Town of Dubrovnik. The fort has walls that are 12 meters thick (on the side that faces the sea). During Medieval times, it is said that it used to be defended by 10 canons.

In the show, the fort doubles as the Red Keep in King’s Landing, so it makes quite a large number of appearances throughout the 8 seasons of Game of Thrones.

Dubrovnik Game of Thrones Locations – Island of Lokrum

If you take a speed boat from Dubrovnik, you’ll reach Island of Lokrum in not more than 15 minutes. The island located on the Eastern Croatian coast, is a Nature Reserve and a Special Forest Vegetation Reserve. It is inhabited by several families of peacocks that were introduced to the island in the 19th century by the Austrian archduke Maximilian.

In Game of Thrones, Island of Lokrum was used as the backdrop of several scenes depicting the city of Qarth. Some garden scenes were also filmed here, in the island’s beautiful botanical gardens.

Trsteno Arboretum as Kings Landing

Trsteno is located just a 20 minutes bus ride outside Dubrovnik, and it is one of the most beautiful arboretums in the region. It was established at the end of the 15th century and covers an area of 25 hectares. The arboretum includes about 300 species of exotic and decorative trees and shrubs.

The Trsteno Arboretum was one of the most important filming sets in Game of Thrones. It was chosen to double as the gardens of King’s Landing, the place where some of the most important secrets were spilled and where some of the most intricate plots were being woven.

So here you have them! These are the locations in Dubrovnik (and some outside Dubrovnik, but not too far) where Game of Thrones was filmed. And even if you are not a huge fan of the show, get ready to become a huge Dubrovnik fan! Just saying…
